Survival Roundup Weekend
The Survival Roundup is a weekend event dedicated to learning and practicing survival and self reliance skills in a relaxed setting with fellow survival enthusiasts. The Roundup is designed to present information in a classroom setting and then to give the participants the chance to practice their new skills. The evenings provide the opportunity to socialize, share knowledge, and attend specialized night skills training.
Roundup Topics
Specific topics will vary between individual Roundups depending on the season, training location, and guest instructors. The Roundup will focus on a variety of survival and self reliance subjects. Classes may include:
- Fundamentals of Survival: An introduction to the priorities of survival with discussions on each of the elements of the Survival Hierarchy.
- Improvised Shelters: An in depth look at building improvised shelters using common survival kit items, such as ponchos and emergency blankets, and using natural materials. Focus will be on site selection, building shelters, and understanding insulation and heat transfer principles.
- Fire Craft: A hands on class demonstrating various fire building techniques using both modern and primitive methods. Depending on the class size and available materials, students may have the opportunity to construct primitive fire bows.
- Family Emergency Planning: Class will assist students in developing a personalized emergency preparedness plan for their family or group. Principles will aid them in identifying what events they should prepare for and how to manage their time and money to maximize their readiness.
- Land Navigation: An introduction to the art of land navigation to include map reading, using a compass, estimating distance, using channels, barriers, and offsets, and the basic principles of celestial navigation.
- Natural Navigation: Introduction to the principles of navigation without the aid of map or compass. Class will cover determining direction via the sun, stars, or shadows; how to read the terrain to find shelter, water, and civilization; and, how to remain oriented while traveling in the wilderness.

Principles will be applied to everything from pocket kits to car kits to 72-hour bags. Students are encouraged to bring their emergency kits to this class.
